Conducted some interviews today to recruit new engineers to the company. There was this particular person that caught my attention.
A post of Service Engineer.. (Hooey has a blog entry dedicated to Engineers). u'll expect only males to apply. I was reading this application, the photo showed a person with a crew cut and appears to be a guy, but the name is "Miss". No indication of gender. So it sparked off a series of discussion. Is she a tomboy or is he a lady-boy. Well, the latter is more common in thailand. Her experience and academic performances definitely fits the bill, so we asked her down for an interview. It is also impossible to determine whether if its a he or she over the phone. gosh... Anyways, we have to give another potential candidate a chance and not show gender discrimination.
Unexpected, she came dressed in a shirt and jeans with a crew hair cut. A firm handshake to greet us. Its the 1st firm handshake i received so far from any candidates, YES.. the male candidates just give a soft handshake. Her experience is most relevant. Her GP is also much higher than most candidates. She also had the nicest handwriting. Can't blame them as writing in thai is really different from writing roman characters. At the end of the day, she also tidied up some of the drawings tt we had showed her before leaving. Really a responsible and impressive girl.
I wonder how she survive in a male dominate environment. Frankly, i can hardly tell that she is a female, except for her slightly softer voice, which is normal for guys here anyways. Well.. in terms of qualification and experience, she definitely fits the bill. But is she able to fit in with the rest of the engineers? In a bigger company she was working in, she was in charge of a grp of engineers (guys i presume). I admire her for i think she must be able to gain their respect in order for her to work.
Well.. if she wasn't chosen bcoz we felt that she wont fit in with the rest, bcoz of her gender, is it consider gender discrimination? I've read news abt companies being sued bcoz of this.
Anyways... there's always more than 1 ways to reject someone. =)
